Solana Alpenglow Upgrade Launches on Test Cluster, Cuts Transaction Finality
Solana's (SOL) Alpenglow consensus upgrade has launched on a test cluster, marking the largest overhaul in the network's history. The upgrade aims to cut transaction finality from roughly 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds.
Speaking at Consensus Miami 2026, Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko said the release is on track for Q3 and called it a pivotal step in the protocol's evolution. He framed Alpenglow as proof that Solana can manage MEV at the consensus layer rather than through external middleware.
The upgrade replaces Proof of History and TowerBFT with two new components, Votor and Rotor. It penalizes slot leaders that miss timeout thresholds, reducing their probability of winning future slots.
