Solana Boosts Compute Limit by 66% Amid Rapid Fire Upgrades
Solana is set to undergo another significant upgrade in its infrastructure, as the network's mainnet block compute limit increases by 66% from 60 million to 100 million Compute Units (CUs). This change will take effect within 24 hours at the start of Epoch 1009.
This represents the second major increase in less than a week, following the July 23 upgrade that raised the cap from 50 million CUs to 60 million. The latest update was proposed by Lucas Bruder from Jito Labs back in May and aims to provide more room for transactions and complex smart contract calls within each block.
The increase will only affect the Maximum Block Units limit, leaving the Max Writable Account Units and Max Vote Units unchanged at 12 million and 36 million respectively. This means that while the network can process more transactions, validators running on lower-end hardware may face increased execution times and potential instability.
The Solana community will need to monitor validator performance metrics closely in the days following the activation of Epoch 1009 to gauge the impact of this upgrade. If the higher compute limit leads to issues with block production or centralization, it could have far-reaching consequences for the network's infrastructure and overall stability.
