Solana Completes First Slot Time Upgrade, Targets 200 ms Goal
Solana has successfully implemented its first major upgrade in slot time on its mainnet. The blockchain now targets completing each slot in 350 milliseconds, down from 400 milliseconds. This is a significant reduction and marks the beginning of a roadmap that aims to further decrease slot times to as low as 200 milliseconds.
The change is part of proposal SIMD-0525 and reduces the target slot time by 12.5%. While this may lead to faster confirmations and reduced latency for users, it does not automatically translate to an increase in transaction throughput. The Solana Foundation emphasizes that reducing slot times is a separate goal from increasing the network's computational capacity.
The first step towards achieving 200-millisecond slots has been completed, but the next target on the roadmap is already set at 300 milliseconds. It is unclear when this will be implemented, and developers are advised to monitor the network's behavior before proceeding with further upgrades.
