Solana Cuts Block Confirmation Times in Half to 350 Milliseconds

Solana has made its first step towards achieving sub-second block confirmation times by reducing its slot window from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds. This change was implemented as part of a staged process, with the feature gate being activated at slot 440,208,000.

The reduced slot time is expected to improve the network's overall performance and reduce the time it takes for transactions to be confirmed. According to Trillium, a Solana validator-telemetry provider, the mean slot spacing was recorded as 365.4ms in epoch 1021, with only 331 skipped slots and a 0.077% skip rate.

The change also marks a significant improvement over the previous epoch, where a 420.7ms mean was recorded, along with 1,890 skipped slots and a 0.438% skip rate. Solana's official upgrade roadmap calls for further reductions in slot time, with targets of 300ms, 250ms, and eventually 200ms.
