Solana is upgrading its network to make transactions faster and more efficient. The Alpenglow consensus upgrade will reduce finality times from 12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds, a nearly 99% decrease. This change will allow the network to process transactions at near-instant speed, making it ideal for applications like payments and trading systems.

Alpenglow replaces Solana's current TowerBFT consensus design with a new protocol developed by Anza. The upgrade introduces a fast-finalization path when 80% of stake votes for a block, alongside a slower path requiring two voting rounds from 60% of stake.

Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko explained that finality is only important at the cash register, as market makers and trading systems often act before a transaction reaches full finality. For consumer payments, this upgrade will make a significant difference, moving closer to conventional digital payment systems' speed.
