Solana Cuts Mainnet Slot Time to 350 Milliseconds
Solana has made significant progress in its goal to reduce slot time, cutting it from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds. This change took effect at epoch 1020 and marks the first reduction since the network's launch. The Solana Foundation plans to achieve a 200-millisecond target through four further reductions of 50 milliseconds each.
According to Jacob Creech, vice president of technology at the Solana Foundation, this is a new era for Solana, with 350 milliseconds being the current target. He also mentioned that the next stop would be 300 milliseconds. The average slot time has already dropped to 360 milliseconds from the previous 400-millisecond figure.
The change was made possible by Anza's Agave v4.2 release, which included several other protocol changes. Brennan Watt, chief executive of Anza, confirmed that testnet slot times had reached 182 milliseconds, with an average of 193 milliseconds over the preceding hour. Mert Mumtaz, chief executive of Helius, predicted that shorter slots paired with a higher block limit would quadruple network throughput in the near term.
The reduction has tightened timing margins for validators, who now have a window of 1.4 seconds instead of 1.6 seconds to process blocks. Off-chain software still treats the 400-millisecond slot as a fixed number rather than a value read from the cluster, posing a hurdle for operators.
