Solana Cuts On-Chain Storage Costs by 90%
Solana has implemented its first rent reduction on testnet, significantly lowering on-chain storage fees by 90%. This change makes maintaining token accounts about ten times cheaper, reducing costs from roughly $0.16 to $0.016 per account.
The current rate of 6,960 lamports per byte will be reduced to 696 lamports per byte, making the rent system a more manageable option for developers managing large numbers of accounts.
The reduction will also help lower locked SOL requirements, which is good news for those who need to manage multiple accounts. The rollout will be gradual, starting with devnet in August 2026 and mainnet shortly after.
