The Alpenglow upgrade is a deep overhaul of Solana's consensus mechanism, targeting the transaction finality bottleneck directly. It is built on two key components: Votor, a new optimized voting protocol, and Rotor, a redesigned block propagation mechanism.
With Alpenglow, high-frequency DeFi applications, on-chain trading platforms, and blockchain gaming will be able to deliver real-time transaction confirmation comparable to centralized platforms. The upgrade also reduces complexity involved in managing transient states between transaction submission and final confirmation, making simpler smart contracts possible.
