Solana Delays Alpenglow Consensus Upgrade, Sets October Launch Date
Solana's upcoming consensus upgrade, Alpenglow, has been pushed back from August to October 2026. This delay aims to ensure a smoother transition to the new Votor algorithm, which promises faster transaction finality of around 150 milliseconds. In comparison, the current TowerBFT consensus takes approximately 12.8 seconds.
Another crucial aspect of this upgrade is the registration of a new cryptographic key (BLS pubkey) for validators. This must be done by July 22, 2026, or they risk losing staking rewards without warning.
For SOL holders, no immediate action is required regarding the upgrade itself until its official activation date. However, it's essential to be cautious of scams that may request migrations or key inputs in an attempt to take advantage of this situation.
