Solana Dominates x402 Micropayment Protocol with 70% Market Share
Solana has taken the lead in processing micropayments through the x402 protocol, which allows AI agents to pay for APIs and data using USDC. As of mid-August 2026, Solana accounted for approximately 70% of monthly x402 protocol volume, processing a total transaction volume of around $24.24 million over the prior 30 days.
The x402 protocol was developed by the Coinbase Developer Platform team and repurposes the HTTP 402 status code to enable seamless payments between machines. An AI agent can pay for weather data from an API in USDC at the moment of request, eliminating the need for subscriptions or human intervention.
Solana surpassed Base in daily x402 transaction counts on August 25, 2026, marking a significant milestone in its growth. The protocol's cumulative activity across all chains is estimated to be between 120 million and 187 million transactions, with Solana alone processing over 35 million of those.
