Solana Edge: Outage Exposes Concentration Risk in Validator Infrastructure
Solana's August 2026 outage was not a blockchain shutdown but a routing issue at TeraSwitch, its infrastructure as a service provider. On August 12, 28.83% of staked SOL went offline due to a failure in the data center network, putting the network within 4.51 percentage points of the stake threshold associated with losing finality. This was not a complete Solana network failure, as blocks were still being produced and transactions landed.
TeraSwitch's routing failure was caused by a routine configuration change that was subsequently removed, along with further protections and software upgrades applied. The incident highlighted a concentration issue with Solana validators, where a set of stake-heavy validators were running on infrastructure that could fail together. This is the kind of correlated failure that infrastructure diversification seeks to avoid.
Solana's Tower BFT consensus system is stake-weighted, meaning that for a block to reach finality, more than two-thirds (66.67%) of SOL staked to validators must vote for the same chain. If more than a third of the voting stake enters a delinquent state, the supermajority will no longer be obtainable for agreeing on new blocks.
