Solana, Ethereum Blockchain Upgrades Set for Busy August

The blockchain space is witnessing significant upgrades in August 2026, with two major protocol teams - Solana and Ethereum - pushing changes to their mainnets. The Solana team has scheduled its Agave v4.2 client for mainnet feature activation on August 17, which will halve slot times to 200 milliseconds, increase transaction size limits, and reduce rent costs.

Solana's Alpenglow consensus rewrite is also entering a critical phase alongside the Agave upgrade. The full switch from Proof of History and TowerBFT to Votor and Rotor is expected on testnet in July and mainnet in August, according to Solana's engineering changelog.

Ethereum's Glamsterdam update has cleared its final devnet stage in June 2026, with some trackers citing an end-of-August mainnet target. However, past Ethereum forks have typically required two to four months of public testnet seasoning after devnets finish, which could push the mainnet release to September or December.

The Glamsterdam update is expected to bring enshrined proposer builder separation and block-level access lists, allowing validators to process unrelated transactions in parallel. However, no mainnet block height or locked date has been announced by Ethereum core developers yet.
