Solana Foundation CISO Warns of Looming AI-Generated Scam Threat

The Solana Foundation's Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Michael Coates, has warned that AI scams are the next major security threat in the crypto sector. Speaking to CoinDesk, Coates stated that recent security incidents have come from more sophisticated tactics such as fake identities and AI-generated scams rather than smart contract flaws.

Coates, who previously served as Twitter's CISO and led security at Mozilla, which develops the Firefox web browser, has joined the Solana Foundation this year. He is responsible not only for the foundation's own security but also for strengthening security capabilities across projects in the Solana ecosystem.

The CISO emphasized that crypto hacks often make headlines because of the large amounts stolen, but these incidents do not stem from flaws in the blockchain itself. Instead, operational security problems or Web2 issues lead to key leaks.

Coates warned that social engineering attacks will become far worse with the power of AI and deepfakes, which are expected to replicate voices of people a victim knows on a large scale.
