Solana Governance Vote Reveals Founder Influence, Validators Retain Authority

A recent Solana governance vote on SGP-0003, which aimed to reform the network's fee structure, has shed light on the power dynamics between co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko and validators and stakers.

The vote, which took place on August 28, saw a majority of participating stakeholders (61.14% of the total snapshot) support the proposal, but it ultimately failed to meet the required two-thirds threshold due to the presence of abstentions, which counted towards the approval calculation.

According to the Solana governance framework, any proposal must receive a two-thirds majority of participating stake to pass. However, in this case, the inclusion of abstentions as part of the approval calculation meant that the proposal fell short by approximately 33.83 million SOL (worth around $25.3 million at current prices).

Yakovenko's public support for the proposal focused on the initial resource-fee rate of one-tenth of a lamport per requested cost unit, but validators and stakers were ultimately deciding on the entire three-stage path, including later feature gates that would lift the rate to one-quarter and then one-half of a lamport.

The rejection of SGP-0003 highlights the complex power dynamics at play in Solana's governance structure. While Yakovenko's endorsement helped elevate the proposal and provided an economic argument for the changes, validators and stakers exercised their authority granted by the ratified rules to reject the bundled mandate.
