Solana Nears 200ms Slot Time Target with 50ms Reduction
Solana's blockchain has achieved a significant milestone by cutting its slot time to 350 milliseconds for the first time since its inception. The change marks the beginning of a broader effort to reduce the network's original 400-millisecond slot target down to 200 milliseconds.
According to Solana Foundation vice president of technology Jacob Creech, this reduction is part of a staged roadmap to improve latency and accelerate confirmations across the network. The move is expected to halve the time between transaction submission and confirmation, which is critical for payments and high-frequency applications.
The new slot time is made possible by the approval and merge of SIMD-0525 on May 14. The reduction will unfold in 50-millisecond stages, with three further reductions planned before reaching the final target of 200 milliseconds.
