Solana Payment Channels Hit 1 Million Payments Per Second, But Artificial Activity Raises Red Flags
The Solana Foundation has launched Payment Channels, claiming to have achieved a benchmark of 1 million payments per second in a controlled test. The test involved 100,000 unique wallets and had a theoretical capacity of 80 billion payments in 24 hours, supporting x402 and MPP protocols with Alibaba Cloud as the first live partner.
The architecture of Payment Channels functions like a digital bar tab, allowing users to authorize spending limits once, then spend against that limit off-chain via signed messages. The final net amount is settled in a single on-chain transaction, removing three specific friction points: constant authorization, custodial databases, and individual settlement.
However, the test's results have been met with skepticism due to artificial activity. Artemis Analytics found that approximately half of x402 transactions are self-dealing and wash trading, while real daily x402 volume was near $28,000 as of March 2026.
