Solana Powers Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks
Solana is expanding its role beyond cryptocurrency trading by facilitating the development of decentralized physical infrastructure networks, or DePIN. These networks use blockchain incentives to encourage individuals and businesses to deploy real-world resources such as wireless hotspots, mapping cameras, and computing hardware.
One example of this model in action is Helium, which migrated its blockchain operations to Solana and now uses community-deployed wireless infrastructure to serve telecom users. The network reached 3.4 million daily active users in Q1 2026, up from 1.4 million in Q2 2025.
Helium's economic model connects usage with HNT tokens. Network users purchase dollar-denominated Data Credits by burning HNT, linking real wireless demand to the token system. The network also operates carrier offload across nearly 2,500 restaurant locations, transferring over 274,000 gigabytes of mobile data in one month.
Other DePIN projects, such as Hivemapper and Nosana, are using Solana-based incentives to coordinate street-level mapping and distributed computing resources. If these networks continue to scale, Solana could become the accounting and incentive layer underneath physical infrastructure that users interact with without knowing blockchain is involved.
