Solana Reaches 300ms Slot Target, Potentially Boosting Liquidity Providers
Solana's mainnet has achieved a significant milestone by reaching its reported 300-millisecond slot target, reducing the intervals allocated for block production. This upgrade is accompanied by Anza's release of Agave v4.3 validator software developer on September 8, calling for volunteers to adopt it.
The economic implications of this upgrade are multifaceted. A key question arises regarding how much trading value remains with liquidity providers after faster execution, fees, and competition between bots. The Solana Foundation's analysis in August highlights the benefits of shorter intervals for pools with high trading fees and those that lag external markets.
Constant-product pools, a conventional Automated Market Maker (AMM) design, are examined by the Solana Foundation's research. These pools allow traders to swap assets against a pool of assets, but when an external market price moves before the pool updates, arbitrageurs can trade against outdated prices, capturing the difference and leaving liquidity providers with the cost.
According to the underlying research by Jason Milionis, Ciamac Moallemi, and Tim Roughgarden, fee-bearing AMMs with discrete, randomly arriving blocks and an external price process suggest less arbitrage extraction as blocks become more frequent. However, proprietary AMMs use quote- or oracle-driven strategies, making information freshness another part of the competition.
