Solana Seeks Lightning-Fast Transaction Finality with Alpenglow Upgrade
Solana is gearing up for a significant upgrade to its consensus architecture, dubbed Alpenglow. The upgrade aims to reduce transaction finality from around 12.8 seconds to approximately 150 milliseconds.
This change could arrive as early as September, according to recent updates from the Solana Foundation. However, their official documentation currently places the rollout in the third quarter of 2026, and a recent update suggests that Alpenglow will be activated through Agave 4.3, targeted for October.
Solana's co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko has argued that finality is 'really only important at the cash register.' He implies that while faster confirmation times are beneficial, stronger finality may not be as crucial for everyday users.
