Solana Sees Surge in AI-Powered Machine-to-Machine Payments via x402
The Solana blockchain has seen a significant increase in machine-to-machine payments, thanks to AI agents using the x402 protocol. Over the course of one week, these agents initiated over 3.3 million USDC worth of payments on the platform.
x402 uses the HTTP 402 status code to enable internet-native payments for APIs, data, and digital resources. The majority of transaction volume on this protocol is denominated in USDC, with a staggering 99.99% of agentic transactions being settled in stablecoins.
This adoption highlights the growing use case for stablecoins in machine-to-machine payments. AI agents require a way to pay for resources such as data and APIs without relying on traditional payment systems, which are not built for high-volume, low-value transactions.
