Solana Set for Groundbreaking Consensus Overhaul with Alpenglow Upgrade
Solana is nearing its most significant consensus overhaul to date, Alpenglow, which promises to significantly reduce finality times from approximately 12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds.
The upgrade will replace Solana's existing TowerBFT consensus mechanism with Votor, a new voting architecture designed to improve performance and security.
According to the Solana Foundation's current upgrade tracker, the transition is expected to occur through the Agave 4.3 validator-client release, which is currently targeting October 2026 for activation.
