Solana Sinks 70% in 2026 as Memecoin Economy Collapses
Solana's (SOL) price has been under pressure in 2026, plummeting by roughly 70% from its all-time high of $293 set in January 2025 to trade around $87 in early March. The collapse is attributed to a combination of factors including geopolitical turmoil, the decline of the memecoin economy that fueled much of Solana's revenue, and uncertainty about the four-year halving cycle.
The first quarter of 2026 has been particularly brutal for risk assets, with Bitcoin (BTC) trading near $71,000 and the total cryptocurrency market capitalization hovering around $2.41 trillion. The Fear and Greed Index sat at an extreme fear reading of 15, and Bitcoin dominance held at roughly 58%, placing the market firmly in what analysts call 'Bitcoin Season'. Altcoins have been hit harder than the flagship asset, with 95% trading below their 200-day moving average.
However, there are signs that institutional money has not abandoned the space entirely. Fidelity Digital Assets recorded its largest weekly inflow of institutional capital during the first week of March. The European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulations, which took full effect on January 1, 2026, have provided a clearer operating framework and encouraged new participation from traditional finance players.
