Solana Slashes Slot Time to 350 Milliseconds in Quest for Faster Network
Solana's mainnet slot time has been reduced to 350 milliseconds, marking a significant milestone in the network's development. This change is part of a planned four-step process that will eventually bring the target slot time down to 200 milliseconds.
The first reduction took effect at epoch 1020, and it follows several testnet slots that have already reached 182-193 milliseconds. According to Brennan Watt, chief executive of Anza, these reductions on the testnet have landed roughly every two epochs.
Mert Mumtaz, chief executive of Helius, believes that shorter slots paired with a higher block limit will quadruple network throughput in the near term. However, this also means validators will face tighter timing margins, with a narrower window to handle handoff and propagation.
