Solana Soars as Bitcoin and Altcoins See Volatile Week
Crypto markets continued their volatile ride this week, ending flat after a choppy session. The market cap dropped below $2.7 trillion on August 23 before recovering to reach $2.79 trillion by Friday.
The top cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, saw its price briefly surge above $81,000 on Tuesday, but then dropped below $77,000 in the lead-up to Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole address. It ultimately reclaimed $78,000 by Saturday afternoon, posting a modest 1% weekly gain.
Himanshu Sahay, co-founder and CTO of Arch Lending, noted that the simultaneous movement in Bitcoin and gold suggests a broader reassessment of scarce assets. He believes Bitcoin is increasingly being traded within a macro framework rather than purely on crypto-specific narratives.
Solana led the altcoin gains this week, with its price buoyed by Charles Schwab's announcement that it will add the digital asset to its accounts in the near future. Other altcoins, such as Monero and RAIN, also saw significant gains, while XRP and Dogecoin suffered losses.
