Solana Speeds Up: Blockchain Slot Time Dropped to 350ms
Solana's blockchain has achieved a significant milestone by reducing its slot time to 350 milliseconds, marking the first such reduction since its inception. This change is part of Solana's ongoing efforts to improve latency and accelerate confirmations on the network.
According to Jacob Creech, the vice president of technology at the Solana Foundation, 'We're in a new era of 350ms. Next stop, 300ms.'
The average slot times on Solana currently stand at 360 milliseconds, which is down from its original target of 400 milliseconds. The network plans to further reduce slot times by three additional stages of 50 milliseconds each, with the goal of reaching 200 milliseconds.
These reductions are part of the Agave v4.2 validator client developed by Anza, and are targeted for mainnet activation in the near future. The proposal establishing shorter slot times was approved and merged on May 14.
