Solana Speeds Up Blocks to 350 Milliseconds, Targets 200
Solana has successfully reduced its block interval to 350 milliseconds, marking the fastest pace since its launch. This change is part of a four-step plan to reach an even faster block time of 200 milliseconds.
The upgrade was approved in May through the technical proposal SIMD-0525 and aims primarily to reduce network latency rather than increase throughput. By shortening the slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds, each leader's rotation interval is reduced from 1.6 seconds to 1.4 seconds.
The shorter slots are designed to allow transactions to move through the network more quickly, potentially improving user experience for decentralized applications and payments. However, this change does not increase the number of transactions that can fit into a single slot, making it primarily a latency improvement.
