Solana Speeds Up: Mainnet Slot Time Drops to 350ms
Solana has made its first major step towards reducing latency by decreasing its mainnet target slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds. This change, which went live around epoch 1020 on Friday, marks a significant improvement in the network's ability to produce blocks and confirm transactions.
The reduction in slot time is part of a staged plan outlined in SIMD-0525, a Solana Improvement Proposal authored by Brennan Watt. The proposal aims to reduce the target slot duration from 400ms to 200ms, with four separate feature-gated stages: 350ms, 300ms, 250ms, and finally 200ms.
The shorter slots will allow for faster block production and reduced latency, which is essential for traders, market makers, and latency-sensitive applications. The change also improves market structure by reducing the maximum amount of time a single leader can delay or reorder transactions before another validator gets its turn.
