Solana Speeds Up: Testnet Upgrade Cuts Slot Time by 50ms
Solana's blockchain development roadmap has reached another significant milestone with the successful deployment of its latest network performance upgrade on the testnet. The update reduces the blockchain's slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds, representing the first phase of an ambitious effort to dramatically improve transaction processing speeds and overall network responsiveness.
This improvement may seem modest at first glance, but even small reductions in slot time can significantly increase network responsiveness, reduce confirmation latency, and enhance the user experience for decentralized applications. The ultimate target is to reduce slot times to approximately 200 milliseconds, making Solana one of the fastest major blockchain networks available.
Solana's developers plan three additional performance upgrades that will gradually lower slot times toward the desired goal. If achieved, this would establish one of the shortest block production intervals among major public blockchain networks, surpassing Ethereum's current 12-second slot time. Solana currently processes new slots faster than Ethereum at its present 350-millisecond slot time.
