Solana Surges on Macro Shock and Chain Upgrades
Solana's price surged 6.5% in just six hours on August 19, 2026, driven by a combination of macroeconomic factors and chain-specific upgrades.
The move coincided with the US Treasury's announcement to double its long-term bond buybacks to at least $4B per operation, starting in September, which triggered a broad risk-asset rally. This news led to a short squeeze across crypto, with between $1.2B and $1.9B in shorts being wiped out in a 1-4 hour window.
During this time, Solana's price increased from around $82 to the mid-$80s, outperforming other major crypto assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum. This surge was largely due to the chain-specific catalyst of upcoming upgrades to its mainnet, including a reduction in target slot times from 400ms to 350ms.
The upgrade aims to increase block scheduling frequency while keeping total compute per second roughly constant by reducing per-slot compute limits. This change is expected to tighten validator handoffs and increase the cadence of votes and gossip, pushing toward sub-second or even sub-200ms finality over time.
