Solana Unlocking $360M in Locked Tokens Through SIMD-0437 Upgrade

A new Solana upgrade has begun to free up previously locked SOL tokens, and users are already seeing their excess funds returned. The change, called SIMD-0437, is a gradual reduction in account storage requirements, which currently stands at around 9% of the previous requirement.

As the reduction progresses, some wallets may be able to recover more than $360 million worth of SOL tokens that were previously needed as storage deposits. These deposits are often referred to as 'rent' by Solana, but they work more like a refundable bond than an actual fee.

To take advantage of this change, users can use the official guide provided by Solana or third-party tools such as Overfunded. The excess funds can be withdrawn from supported accounts without closing them or moving the tokens held there.
