Solana Unveils Transaction V1 and Rent Reductions as Alpenglow Looms
Solana is gearing up for several significant upgrades to its network, starting with Transaction V1 on September 9. This update will increase the maximum serialized transaction size from 1,232 bytes to a whopping 4,096 bytes, allowing for more complex operations like zero-knowledge proofs and cross-chain transactions.
The larger format will require developers to opt into it, but existing legacy and version-zero transactions will remain compatible. The upgrade also comes with the possibility of bandwidth and network fragmentation risks, making coordinated testing crucial before wider adoption.
In addition to Transaction V1, Solana is planning a series of rent reductions, starting next week with one of five stages that aim to lower the rent calculation from 6,960 lamports per byte to 696 lamports per byte. This change will reduce the amount of SOL developers must lock when creating token accounts and other on-chain state.
Meanwhile, Solana has already reduced its target slot time to 350 milliseconds, with further reductions planned at 300, 250, and eventually 200 milliseconds. However, these changes follow separate activation processes and will not automatically reduce slot times or activate Alpenglow, the network's proposed consensus redesign.
Alpenglow remains a key goal for Solana, aiming to reduce transaction finality to approximately 150 milliseconds by October, when Agave 4.3 is expected to be released.
