Solana Validators Pass Double Disinflation Proposal Amid Controversy
Solana's validators have successfully passed Proposal 0002 (SGP-0002), also known as the Double Disinflation proposal, which aims to reduce inflation by increasing the disinflation rate from -15% to 30%. The vote was a close call, with 176.29 million $SOL (67%) in favor and 66.19 million $SOL (25.16%) against, while 20.63 million $SOL (7.84%) abstained. Mert Mumtaz, co-founder and CEO of Helius, a Solana-focused service provider and validator, initially doubted the proposal's chances but ultimately played a crucial role in its passage.
According to Mumtaz, some validators opposed the proposal under the misconception that it would preserve revenue through yield. He dismissed this notion as 'mathematically nonsense' and suggested those holding such views should consider moving to Venezuela to understand the consequences of prioritizing asset quantity over value. Meanwhile, Everstake expressed concerns about the pace of change, its impact on smaller validators, and the potential for staking participation and delegator pressure.
The passage of SGP-0002 was influenced by Kraken's last-minute vote switch from 'no' to 'yes', which Mumtaz attributed to his 500 calls in the final hours. The proposal's success has sparked a mix of reactions, with some celebrating the disinflationary move and others expressing caution about its potential consequences.
