Solana's Alpenglow Upgrade Takes Shape, Eyes Mainnet Rollout
Solana's Alpenglow upgrade is live on a test cluster, marking a significant milestone for the network. The upgrade replaces Proof of History and TowerBFT with Votor and Rotor, aiming to reduce transaction finality from 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds.
According to Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko, Alpenglow validates the network's speed-first architecture and is on track for a Q3 mainnet rollout. The upgrade has already cleared Solana's validator set with over 98% support in September 2025.
The new consensus design redirects validator incentives toward transparent order-flow auctions rather than eliminating MEV outright, as Ethereum does with its external relay and builder stack.
Yakovenko frames Alpenglow as proof that Solana can manage MEV at the consensus layer. The upgrade's 150-millisecond finality target could sharpen Solana's pitch as Layer 1 infrastructure for high-frequency DeFi and payments applications.
