Solana's Alpenglow Upgrade Targets 150ms Block Finalization Time
Solana is upgrading its blockchain network to Alpenglow, marking one of the biggest shifts in its history. The update swaps two founding systems for a faster and safer design.
The new system, called Votor, replaces TowerBFT's old rules with a more efficient voting engine that can handle bad actors and offline nodes at once. Votor stays safe with a 20% bad plus 20% offline stake buffer, which is a strong safety net for a live money network.
The update has been tested on a live test cluster since May 2026, and core teams have used this Solana Alpenglow testnet phase to catch bugs early. Some bugs have already turned up, but they are being fixed ahead of the real switch.
The mainnet launch is set for Q3 2026, and node teams must prep in advance. This is a breaking change that needs new indexing support across the space. Any live vote-system swap on a big chain carries real risk, even after months of tests.
