Solana's Alpenglow Upgrade to Shave Seconds Off Transaction Finality
The Solana network is gearing up for a major upgrade called Alpenglow, which promises to dramatically speed up the time it takes for transactions to reach finality. Finality refers to the point at which the network has reached sufficient consensus, and under current conditions, this process can take around 12.8 seconds.
The upgrade aims to reduce this time to a mere 150 milliseconds, making transactions 'feel almost instant' for users. However, it's essential to note that finality is not the same as confirmation. While confirmation can happen quickly, finality provides stronger certainty that the state of a transaction will not be reversed.
Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko has argued that finality is 'really only important at the cash register,' suggesting that it may not have a significant impact on everyday users. Nevertheless, for larger-value payments or sensitive transactions, stronger assurance of finality can be crucial.
