Solana's Brutal Start to 2026: 70% Decline from All-Time High
Solana's outlook for 2026 is uncertain as it navigated a brutal first quarter. Trading near $127 on January 1, Solana briefly surged to $146 in mid-January but then collapsed through February and into March to trade around $87, a roughly 70% decline from its all-time high of $293 set in January 2025.
The broader crypto market was under pressure due to geopolitical turmoil, the collapse of the memecoin economy that fueled much of Solana's revenue, and uncertainty about the four-year halving cycle. Bitcoin traded near $71,000 as of March 14, down from its cycle high of $126,230 recorded in October 2025, while the total cryptocurrency market capitalization hovered around $2.41 trillion.
The European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulations took full effect on January 1, 2026, providing a clearer operating framework that encouraged new participation from traditional finance players across the continent. However, institutional inflows surged to 1,561,859 SOL on a 30-day rolling basis by late February.
The collapse of the memecoin engine has been particularly significant, with memecoins accounting for only 20% of Solana's DEX trading volume. The number of active traders on Solana DEXs plunged from 4.4 million in 2025 to roughly 400,000.
