Solana's CISO Warns of Rising AI-Powered Crypto Scam Threat

Michael Coates, the chief information security officer at the Solana Foundation, is sounding the alarm about the increasing threat of AI-powered crypto scams. According to Coates, attackers are using advanced social engineering tactics, including phishing, impersonation, and voice deepfakes, to convince victims into handing over their credentials or seed phrases.

Coates, who previously worked as CISO at Twitter and led security efforts at Mozilla, warns that these scams are not just limited to technical vulnerabilities in blockchain code. Instead, they often involve compromised credentials and fake identities, which can be created using AI tools.

The Solana Foundation's CISO expects this trend to worsen as AI technology improves. He notes that attackers can now generate realistic messages, fake voices, and convincing identities at scale, making it increasingly difficult for users to spot scams.

To mitigate these risks, Coates advocates for building systems that assume failure will occur. This means implementing layered security measures that can catch and prevent attacks even if one layer fails.
