Solana's Mainnet Sees 25% Reduction in Slot Time, Reaches 300ms
Solana's mainnet has seen a significant reduction in slot time, reaching 300ms after an eight-day period of 25% shortening. This marks the second phase of the 'SIMD-0525' improvement proposal, aimed at reducing slot times from 400ms to 200ms. Solana revealed that the target slot time had been reduced from 400ms to 300ms in just eight days, a 25% decrease.
The reduction in slot time is expected to increase block generation opportunities and reduce the time users wait for transaction confirmations. The SIMD-0525 proposal plans to shorten slot times in four stages: 400ms to 350ms (first phase), 350ms to 300ms (second phase), 300ms to 250ms (third phase), and 250ms to 200ms (fourth phase). Each stage has a separate 'feature gate' that enables it on different epochs.
The first phase, which reduced slot times from 400ms to 350ms, was enabled on the mainnet by August 22nd. The second phase has now been activated, making two out of four stages complete. Solana's monitoring page shows the current actual slot time on the mainnet and indicates that two phases are currently active.
