Solo Miner Wins Big with $200K Bitcoin Block Reward
A solo Bitcoin miner has struck it big, earning a reward of around $200,000 for solving block 960,804. The payout consisted of 3.16 BTC, made up of the standard 3.125 BTC subsidy and 0.03 BTC in fees from over 4,000 transactions.
The miner's success came through CKPool, a service that allows anonymous miners to point their hardware at its infrastructure without running a full Bitcoin node. Dr -ck, the pseudonymous developer behind CKPool, described the winning machine as having a 'wildly variable' hashrate that peaked at 100PH.
This is not an isolated incident, solo blocks have been found with some regularity in recent months. In April, a miner running 70 TH/s earned $225,000, and another scored $210,000 just days later. The varying dollar values are due to the fluctuations in Bitcoin's price.
The block reward itself remains fixed at 3.125 BTC until the next halving, which is expected around 89,000 blocks away in the spring of 2028. At this point, it will drop to 1.5625 BTC.
