Somerville Residents Visit Smaller Bitcoin Mining Facility for Comparison
Homeowners in Somerville, Alabama, are visiting a smaller bitcoin mining facility in Russellville to gauge what their community could face if a proposed 50-megawatt center is built on Union Road.
The Somerville project has been met with months of resident opposition, but the visit to Russellville's Synergy South facility may provide some insight into the potential impact. The Russellville site uses less than 12 megawatts of power and is located near a highway, whereas the proposed facility would use significantly more power and be situated on a lesser-used road.
According to Synergy South's website, their facilities are designed as standalone industrial units, with minimal residential proximity. However, Somerville Mayor Darren Tucker expressed concerns that the proposed center would disrupt residents' lives due to constant noise from the facility's fans and potential water-cooling systems.
Tucker suggested that bitcoin mining centers should be restricted to industrial parks or located in areas where they won't directly affect residential communities. The Russellville police chief confirmed that no complaints have been filed regarding the Synergy South facility, but homeowners remain concerned about the proposed Somerville center.
