Sorare £10M Freeze: Premier League Money Held Over Unlicensed Gambling Claims
The UK's National Crime Agency has frozen £10 million of Premier League money paid by Sorare, a crypto fantasy football company. The funds were held in a Barclays account belonging to The Football Association Premier League Limited and were frozen under a Proceeds of Crime Act order obtained in January 2025.
Sorare faces three Gambling Act counts for unlicensed operations between February 2022 and April 2024, with the trial set for June 2027. The company has denied that its product constitutes gambling under UK law, arguing that it rewards skill rather than chance.
The regulator opened inquiries into whether Sorare required a license in October 2021. If found guilty, the company could face fines or imprisonment of directors.
