South Africa Cracks Down on Cross-Border Crypto Transfers
South Africa is tightening its grip on cross-border cryptocurrency transfers under a new draft regulatory manual. The proposal would require authorized providers to handle and report all crypto transfers moving across borders.
The plan also expands state oversight of digital assets and strengthens reporting across the country's capital flow system. Authorized providers would be responsible for reporting inflows and outflows, including when crypto moves from a domestic provider to an offshore provider or into a privately controlled non-custodial wallet.
However, domestic rand-based cryptocurrency trades would remain outside the proposed framework, separating local market activity from transfers moving value beyond national financial controls. The framework aims to reduce regulatory gaps and improve detection of illicit financial flows.
