South African Coalition Warns Proposed Crypto Regulations Would 'Cripple' Domestic Economy
A coalition of South African crypto advocates, known as CATASTROPHE (Crypto Asset Taskforce for Advancing Sound, Technology-Neutral Regulation for Opportunity, Prosperity and a Healthy Economy), has launched a campaign against proposed cross-border regulations that would severely limit the country's participation in global digital economy.
The draft framework, published by South Africa's National Treasury and the South African Reserve Bank, introduces two major restrictions: blocking cross-border crypto payments by businesses and restricting individual self-custody of cryptocurrencies. According to CATASTROPHE, these measures would harm domestic enterprises and jobs, slow economic participation, and isolate South Africa from the global digital economy.
CATASTROPHE proposes an alternative approach where equivalent cross-border economic activity is regulated consistently. The coalition emphasizes that regulation should be fair, technology-neutral, and designed in the interests of South African consumers and businesses.
