South Carolina Man Loses Over $800K to Cryptocurrency Romance Scam

Share

A South Carolina man has lost over $800,000 to a cryptocurrency investment scam that began as an online romance.

The victim, who lives in Sun City Hilton Head, was initially drawn into what is described as a romance scam involving cryptocurrency investments.

The scammers reportedly established trust with the victim through an online relationship before introducing cryptocurrency as part of their conversation.

The FBI describes this pattern as cryptocurrency investment fraud that relies on social engineering and trust to deceive victims.

Criminals often present themselves as experienced investors or claim a relative, friend, or professional contact has access to profitable trading opportunities.

The scammers may direct victims to professional-looking investment websites or applications where they can create accounts, see portfolio balances, and seemingly watch their money grow.

Federal investigators warn that these platforms are often controlled by the criminals, allowing them to fabricate reported balances, gains, and transaction histories while transferring the victim's actual cryptocurrency into wallets controlled by the fraud network.

The scammers may also permit victims to withdraw part of their initial investment, including supposed profits, early in the scheme to convince them that the platform works.

This tactic is used to increase the amount committed to the platform, with fake returns becoming increasingly lucrative on the screen.

The FBI estimates that cryptocurrency investment fraud accounted for over $7.2 billion in reported losses during 2025, a 24% increase from the prior year.
