South Korea Drops Threshold for Crypto Travel Rule
The South Korean government has decided to eliminate the monetary threshold for its crypto travel rule, requiring virtual asset service providers (VASPs) to submit transaction information for every digital asset transfer.
This change will take effect on August 20th and was announced after a Cabinet meeting review on August 11th. The current framework only requires VASPs to provide sender and recipient information for transfers exceeding approximately $730, or 1 million Korean won.
The revised enforcement aims to align with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) recommendations, which call for the travel rule to apply to all virtual asset transfers without exemptions. The FATF has repeatedly urged member countries to enforce the rule due to the risk of money laundering and terrorist financing through smaller transactions.
Exchanges operating in South Korea will need to implement enhanced due diligence on all transactions, potentially increasing operational costs and processing times. Users may notice additional verification steps when sending crypto, especially to unhosted wallets or foreign exchanges.
