South Korea Leverages Blockchain for National-Scale Capital Markets Tokenization
The South Korean government has taken a significant step towards integrating blockchain technology into its capital markets infrastructure. The Financial Services Commission (FSC) and Korea Securities Depository (KSD) are working together to bring stocks, bonds, and funds onto the blockchain using Avalanche as their platform of choice.
This ambitious program aims to cover all aspects of tokenization, including issuance, trading, clearing, settlement, and investor rights. The involvement of the FSC and KSD provides regulatory and depository backing, ensuring that tokenized securities carry defined investor rights within the existing framework.
Avalanche's AVAX token is poised to become a core component of South Korea's national-scale tokenization effort, rather than just a pilot or private test. The program's success will depend on its execution across the full post-trade chain, particularly in clearing and settlement, where many tokenization projects often struggle.
