South Korea has announced plans to invest over $1 trillion in AI infrastructure, a move that could have significant implications for the global tech industry and cryptocurrency market.

The investment will be split between public and private sectors, with major contributions from companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. The two firms will build four new chip fabrication plants to double South Korea's national DRAM production by around 2031.

The initiative aims to position South Korea as a dominant force in global AI technology, but the focus is not just on making more chips. It's about building the full stack: fabrication plants for advanced memory semiconductors, expanded AI data center capacity, and the infrastructure needed to train and deploy large-scale AI models domestically.

The economic impact is already being priced in at the national level, with South Korea's GDP growth forecast revised upward to 3.0% for July 2026. The country also plans to tokenize government bonds by 2027, aligned with its Central Bank Digital Currency framework.
