South Korea Ruling Party to Reassess Crypto Tax Stance in August
The People Power Party (PPP) in South Korea is set to reassess its position on cryptocurrency taxation during a workshop scheduled for August 27. The party's leader, Jang Dong-hyeok, stated that they will share their stance after discussions, noting that the PPP has maintained a general position on digital assets but has not yet clearly responded to proposals from the Democratic Party or the Lee Jae-myung administration.
The workshop will include in-depth discussions by standing committees on the issue. The government proposed taxing digital-asset income starting January 1, 2027, which was delayed from the originally planned January 2025 implementation as part of a broader tax revision package to ease investor burdens and align with global regulatory trends.
The PPP's renewed attention to crypto taxation comes amid growing public interest in digital assets and increasing calls for clearer regulatory frameworks. South Korea has one of the largest cryptocurrency markets in the world, with a significant portion of the population holding digital assets.
