South Korea Selects Toss Payments for Deposit Token Payment Infrastructure Pilot

Share

Toss Payments, a subsidiary of South Korean fintech giant Toss, has been chosen to lead a government-backed project to develop a deposit token-based payment infrastructure in the country. The initiative aims to reduce payment processing fees for small business owners and speed up settlement times.

The project is part of South Korea's broader strategy to adopt blockchain technology in the financial sector. It involves nine banks, eight payment gateway firms, and two large demand-side participants, with oversight from the Korea Financial Telecommunications & Clearings Institute and cooperation from the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Bank of Korea.

Deposit tokens are digital representations of commercial bank deposits recorded on a blockchain and issued by banks. They can be used for payments and settlements, offering potential efficiencies over traditional methods. The project's outcome will be closely watched by the global fintech community as it may offer a blueprint for other nations exploring similar digital payment solutions.
