South Korea Sets Hard Deadline for Crypto Tax in January 2027
South Korea's crypto tax has finally received a concrete start date after years of delays. Deputy Prime Minister Koo Yoon-chul confirmed that profits from selling cryptocurrencies will be taxed starting January 2027, marking an end to the repeated deferrals.
The confirmation came at a National Assembly Finance and Economy Planning Committee session on July 29, 2026, where lawmakers have floated further delays twice before. Korean investors and exchanges can now plan around the fixed date after treating the tax as a moving deadline for years.
Opposition lawmakers are pushing to repeal or soften the gains tax entirely, which means the January 2027 date could still be subject to change. The government has committed to this baseline, but a shift in political balance before then could alter it.
